What is a domain (domain name)?

It is the unique address you type into your browser to access a website (for example, mydomain.com). It translates an easy-to-remember name into an IP address through the DNS system. It represents your online identity and can also be used to create branded email addresses.

Why having your own domain is the foundation of a strong digital identity.

How can I check if a domain is available?

You can check it directly using cdmon's domain search tool. Simply enter the name you want and the system will instantly show whether it's available or suggest alternatives with other extensions. If the domain is already taken, we recommend trying variations or different extensions.

How do I register a domain?

First, check that the name is available, choose the extension (the final part of the domain, such as .com, .es or .org) that best fits your project, complete the registrant details, and select the registration period (from 1 to 10 years). At cdmon, the process is fast, clear and 100% online, and activation is usually immediate, except for extensions with special requirements.

Here you can see how to register a domain at cdmon.

How much does a domain cost?

The price of a domain depends on the extension (for example, .com, .es or .org) and whether it is standard, premium or on promotion. For example, at cdmon, a .com domain costs €9.95, a .es €4.95 and a .eu €4.75 (VAT not included).

Check the latest domain prices. At cdmon, you will always see transparent pricing for registration, renewal and transfer for each TLD.

Which domain extension should I choose (.com, .es, etc.)?

It depends on your audience and goals. .com is ideal for global projects; .es strengthens your presence in Spain; .org is perfect for organizations; and new gTLDs (such as .shop, .online, .tech) help you stand out by sector or purpose. To protect your brand, also register the main variants.

What is the difference between a domain, hosting and a website?

A domain is the address that takes users to your website (mydomain.com). Hosting is the space or server where your website files and email are stored, and the website is the content that visitors see. You can register your domain with cdmon and easily point it to the hosting of your choice.

How do I transfer a domain to another registrar?

To transfer a domain, first unlock it and request the authorization code (Auth Code or EPP). Then start the transfer from the new registrar and enter that code. You will receive an email to confirm the operation and, once approved, the transfer is usually completed within 5–7 days. Some domains have specific policies, such as .co.uk, which must be transferred from the current registrar, or .es, which does not always extend the registration period by one year.

Here you can see how to transfer a domain to cdmon and check the requirements needed to transfer it.

What is DNS and what is it used for?

DNS (Domain Name System) translates your domain name into an IP address so that browsers and mail servers can locate your website or email. Each domain has: DNS servers, which handle queries, and DNS records (A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, etc.), which define where the associated services are located.

At cdmon, you can easily manage both from your Control Panel.

How do I point my domain to my website?

If your website is hosted with cdmon, you can apply the default DNS records from the domain management panel to connect it to your hosting. If you use another provider, you will need to create A records pointing to your server's IP address or a CNAME record pointing to the hostname provided by your provider. You can also redirect your domain using a 301 (permanent) or 302 (temporary) redirect, or a masked redirect, although not all services support it.

How do I create email addresses with my domain?

Purchase an email or hosting plan that includes email. Create mailboxes (for example, info@mydomain.com) and configure the MX records in DNS. To improve deliverability and avoid spam, add SPF, DKIM and DMARC records. At cdmon, we make it easy: if you have both a domain and hosting, we configure everything automatically.

What is WHOIS and how can I hide my data?

WHOIS displays the public information of a domain: registrant, registrar, dates and status. Since the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) came into force, most personal data is hidden or anonymized by default.

At cdmon, we include private WHOIS by default, protecting your personal data on all extensions that allow it, at no additional cost.

Here you can learn what information WHOIS shows and how domain data privacy works.

What happens if my domain expires?

If you don't renew it in time, your domain enters a grace period during which you can still renew it. After that, it moves to redemption, where recovering it involves an additional fee. Timeframes vary depending on the extension, but during this period your website and email will stop working.

We recommend renewing in advance or enabling auto-renewal at cdmon to avoid losing your domain.

Here you can see the domain life cycle and how to enable automatic renewal from your control panel.

How do I renew a domain and enable auto-renewal?

From your cdmon control panel, you can renew your domain for one or several years (up to the maximum allowed by the TLD). Enable auto-renewal to keep it always active and make sure you have a valid payment method. You will receive reminders before each expiration to prevent interruptions to your website or email.

See how to renew your domain manually or enable auto-renewal step by step.

How long does DNS propagation take?

DNS record propagation is usually completed within minutes, or even seconds, depending on the configured time to live (TTL) and server caching. However, changes to nameservers (NS) may take longer to propagate, typically between 24 and 48 hours.

Keep in mind that some extensions, such as .es domains, only update their servers every 6 hours, which can delay full propagation.

Here you can see how to check DNS propagation.

What is a subdomain and how do I create one?

A subdomain is an “extension” of the main domain, such as blog.mydomain.com or shop.mydomain.com. It is created by adding an A or CNAME DNS record to your DNS zone, or by configuring it directly from your hosting. Unlike a subfolder (for example, mydomain.com/blog), a subdomain is considered a separate entity at a technical level and can point to a different server or project.

At cdmon, you can create as many subdomains as you need, with no limits or additional registration costs.

Does the TLD affect SEO?

The short answer is: yes, but not in the way many people think. The TLD (domain extension) does not improve rankings on its own: Google treats most extensions (.com, .net, .shop…) in a neutral way.

However, geographic domains (.es, .fr, .mx, etc.) do have a direct impact, as they help better geolocate results within a specific country. In addition, the extension you choose can indirectly influence SEO through user trust and branding: classic TLDs (.com, .org) convey stability and recognition, while more creative ones (.tech, .studio, .online) can strengthen brand identity and memorability.

Always choose an extension aligned with your audience and goals: the right TLD communicates who you are and who you're targeting, and that also contributes to visibility.

Can I use accents or special characters (IDN)?

Yes. Many TLDs support Internationalized Domain Names (IDN), which allow characters such as ñ, á, ü or ç. Technically, these domains are converted into Punycode format to work correctly on the Internet. Keep in mind that not all TLDs accept IDNs and that some services (such as email or certain hosting platforms) may have compatibility limitations.

At cdmon, if you enter a name with unsupported characters, the system will notify you during registration so you can correct it.

What is the EPP / Auth code?

It is a unique code that identifies your domain and is used to authorize its transfer between registrars. You can obtain it from your current provider's control panel (at cdmon, from the domain management section). Store it securely and do not share it publicly, as it allows your domain to be transferred to another registrar.

Here you can see how to request or recover your AUTH CODE at cdmon.

How do I change my domain's nameservers?

From the cdmon control panel, you can modify the DNS servers (nameservers) and point your domain to the provider that manages your DNS zone. The change may take several hours to propagate. Before doing so, make sure your new DNS zone is properly configured to avoid downtime or resolution errors.

Which main DNS records should I know (A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS)?

DNS records define where the different services associated with your domain are located:

  • A: points to an IPv4 address.
  • AAAA: points to an IPv6 address.
  • CNAME: creates an alias to another domain name.
  • MX: defines the mail servers.
  • TXT: used for verification or policies (SPF, DKIM, DMARC).
  • NS: delegate the management of the DNS zone.
  • SRV and CAA cover more advanced configurations (for example, VoIP or certificates).

At cdmon, you can create and manage all of these records from the control panel.

¿Cómo configurar SPF, DKIM y DMARC?

SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records help protect your domain from misuse in spoofed emails or spam, and you can easily set them up from the cdmon DNS Panel.

  • SPF: specifies which servers are allowed to send email on your behalf (published as a TXT record).
  • DKIM: adds a digital signature to your emails, set up through your email provider.
  • DMARC: tells mail servers what to do with emails that fail authentication checks (monitor, quarantine, or reject).

What's the difference between a 301 and a 302 redirect?

301 and 302 redirects tell the browser that the requested content is now available at a different URL. They're especially useful when you change your site structure, move content, or switch from http to https, as they prevent 404 errors and help preserve your SEO rankings.

A 301 redirect signals a permanent change. It's the most common option, passes along almost all of the original page's SEO value, and should be used for permanent migrations, version consolidation (www vs non-www), or URL restructuring. A 302 redirect, on the other hand, is temporary and is typically used for testing, campaigns, or maintenance, since it keeps the original URL indexed.

What is a premium domain?

A premium domain is a name with high commercial value that the registry offers for sale at a higher-than-standard price. These domains are usually easy to remember, appealing to brands or specific industries, and can be highly valuable on the market, but they don't guarantee better SEO rankings.

Can I buy a domain that's already registered?

If a domain is already registered, you can't buy it directly.

However, you can try to acquire it by contacting the registrar where the domain is managed. They can pass your interest on to the current owner, who will decide whether they want to sell it or not. Another option is to wait for the domain to expire and become available again, although there's no guarantee this will happen or that you'll be able to register it before someone else.

In these cases, the price is usually high and can vary a lot depending on demand and the name's commercial value.

How long does a domain transfer take?

Transfers for generic domains (gTLDs) usually take between 5 and 7 days to complete, although they may be approved sooner if the domain owner gives their consent.

You won't be able to transfer a domain if:

  • It's been less than 60 days since it was created or since the last transfer.
  • The domain has expired or has fewer than 6 days left before it expires.
  • It was renewed after expiring and fewer than 45 days have passed since the renewal.

Country-code domains (.es, .fr, etc.) have their own timelines and processes, and some can be faster.

Check the requirements to transfer a domain to cdmon

What is TTL in DNS?

TTL (Time To Live) defines how long Internet servers cache your domain's DNS information before checking it again. A low TTL (for example, 300 seconds) helps changes propagate faster, while a high TTL (for example, 86400 seconds) can improve performance by reducing the number of queries.

How do I connect my domain to platforms like Shopify, Wix, WordPress.com, or Google Sites?

Each platform has its own DNS settings to connect your domain. In most cases, you'll need to create an A record or a CNAME record using the values provided by the platform, or in some situations, update your DNS servers.

With cdmon, you can do it easily from the control panel by following the guides for each service.

Can I have multiple domains pointing to the same website?

Yes, you can have multiple domains showing the same content or redirecting to your main domain. This is a great way to protect your brand, use name variations, or prevent typos from leading to the wrong place.

With cdmon, you can do it in three different ways, depending on what you need:

  • Using web hosting aliases: lets you add multiple domains or subdomains to the same hosting plan so they display the same content. It's ideal if you want different addresses to load your main website.
  • Using an IP redirect (A record): allows you to point a domain or subdomain directly to your server's IP address. It's a quick and useful option if you manage your DNS outside of cdmon.
  • Using a URL web redirect: redirects one domain to another (for example, from tumarca.net to tumarca.com). You can choose between a permanent (301) or temporary (302) redirect, and set it up easily from your control panel.

For SEO, we recommend keeping a single canonical domain and applying 301 redirects to secondary domains to consolidate all authority into one main address.

How can I change registrars without losing my website or email?

To avoid any downtime, first check where your DNS is currently hosted. If it's managed by your current registrar, you could temporarily lose DNS resolution during the transfer if that service gets disabled. In that case, create your DNS zone in cdmon before transferring, or keep DNS management where it is until the process is completed. It's also a good idea to lower the TTL and plan the change during low-traffic hours.

How do I verify domain ownership in Gmail or Microsoft 365?

If you have your own domain and want to use it with Gmail (Google Workspace) or Microsoft 365, you'll first need to verify that you own the domain. This step is required before you can send and receive emails using your professional address (for example, you@yourdomain.com).

Both Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 will ask you to add a TXT record at the root of your domain. With cdmon, you can do this easily from the DNS panel: just create a new TXT record with the value provided by each platform.

Once it's saved, wait a few minutes for the record to propagate, then go back to your Gmail or Microsoft 365 admin panel to complete the verification. In most cases, it's confirmed in under an hour.

What's the difference between gTLDs and ccTLDs?

gTLDs (Generic Top-Level Domains) are generic extensions like .com, .org, or .net. ccTLDs (Country Code Top-Level Domains) are country extensions like .es, .fr, or .de, and some of them require residency or language-related requirements. Other ccTLDs, such as .ai, .tv, or .cc, don't have these restrictions. From an SEO perspective, ccTLDs can help geolocate your website for searches in a specific country.

Here you can learn more about the basic features of domains and their extensions

What are the limits of a domain name (length, hyphens, numbers)?

In general, a domain name can't be longer than 63 characters (not counting the extension). You can use letters, numbers, and hyphens, although hyphens can't appear at the beginning or the end. Some domains also support an IDN (Internationalized Domain Name) version, which allows characters from other languages or alphabets.

What is DNSSEC, and should I enable it?

DNSSEC adds an extra layer of security to your domain by digitally signing your DNS records to prevent spoofing or tampering. When it's enabled, you can be sure that DNS responses come from the legitimate server.

With cdmon, you can enable it easily at no extra cost. Some supported extensions may even have it enabled by default to give you added protection from the start, although this can vary depending on the DNS servers you're using.

    What is a CAA record?

A CAA (Certification Authority Authorization) record specifies which Certificate Authorities (CAs) are allowed to issue SSL certificates for your domain or subdomains. This helps prevent unauthorized certificates from being issued and improves overall security. Only the CAs listed in the record can issue valid certificates for that domain.

What is an SRV record and what is it used for?

An SRV (Service) record defines the location of a service within your domain by specifying the host, port, priority, and weight.

It is required by protocols such as Microsoft 365, SIP, or XMPP, which need to know which server to connect to. You can configure multiple SRV records with different priorities to ensure high availability.

What is a wildcard DNS record (*)?

A wildcard DNS record allows a single record to respond to all subdomains that are not explicitly defined, and it is written as *.mydomain.com. It is useful for handling dynamic subdomains or testing environments, but it should be used with caution, as it may interfere with specific DNS records.

What is a PTR record and reverse DNS?

A PTR record enables reverse DNS resolution, meaning it links an IP address to a domain name. It is essential for email reputation and authenticity, as receiving mail servers use it to verify the sender’s origin.

At cdmon, all our servers include reverse DNS (PTR) configured by default.

How can I migrate my email when changing providers or transferring a domain?

Before migrating your email, make sure the email accounts are already created on the destination hosting. Once they are set up, you can import messages from the old server. If you use cdmon, you can easily do this with our email import tool.

After all your emails have been successfully copied, update your DNS or MX records so that new messages start arriving at the destination service. This ensures a smooth transition without email loss before transferring the domain.

Finally, review your email authentication by configuring SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records. These help protect your domain from misuse and improve email deliverability.

    What is a parked domain?

A parked domain is a registered domain without an active website. It may display a basic “under construction” or “for sale” page, or simply be reserved for a future project.

Here you can see how to set up a parking or for-sale page for your domain at cdmon.

What are the grace period, redemption period, and pending delete?

When a domain expires, it is not deleted immediately. For most gTLDs, it goes through several stages:

    • Grace period (Renew Grace Period): you can still renew the domain normally.
    • Redemption period: you can recover the domain by paying an additional fee.
    • Pending delete: the domain is scheduled for deletion but has not yet been released.

Timeframes vary depending on the extension (TLD), so it is always advisable to renew in advance or enable auto-renewal.

Here you can see the complete domain lifecycle and its phases.

Can I change the owner of a domain?

Yes. You can change a domain's ownership from your control panel. For generic domains (gTLDs), this process triggers an automatic 60-day transfer lock for security reasons. For some country-code domains (ccTLDs), such as .es or .fr, the ownership change must be completed directly through the official registry that manages the extension.

At cdmon, the process is guided and secure, and you will receive email confirmation once it is completed.

Here you can see step by step how to change the owner of a generic domain.

What is the difference between Registrar Lock and Registry Lock?

Both are security mechanisms designed to protect your domain, but they operate at different levels. Registrar Lock is a basic protection that prevents your domain from being transferred to another registrar unless it is manually unlocked. It helps avoid unauthorized transfers or administrative errors and can be easily managed from your cdmon control panel.

Registry Lock, on the other hand, provides advanced protection applied directly by the official TLD registry. It blocks any critical changes—such as transfers, DNS modifications, or domain deletion—until manual verification is completed with the registry.

It is intended for corporate or high-value domains, and its availability depends on the policies of each extension.

What is the difference between a registrar and a registry?

Although they sound similar, they refer to different roles within the domain name system.

A registrar (such as cdmon) is the accredited provider where you register, renew, and manage your domains. It offers the control panel, support, and related services such as DNS, hosting, and email.

A registry, on the other hand, is the official organization responsible for managing each domain extension (for example, Verisign for .com or Red.es for .es). It defines the technical rules and policies for each TLD.

In short: the registry manages the extension, and the registrar allows you to register and manage it easily.

How can I prevent domain hijacking?

To protect your domain, follow these best practices:

    • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your account.
    • Use strong, unique passwords.
    • Keep the transfer lock (Registrar Lock) enabled.
    • Use a secure and up-to-date registrant email address.
    • Enable DNSSEC if your TLD supports it.
    • Be cautious of phishing emails that mimic renewals or fake notifications.

What is an ALIAS or ANAME record?

ALIAS or ANAME records are special record types created by some DNS providers that allow the root domain to point to another domain name. Normally, you cannot create a CNAME record for the root domain (for example, mydomain.com), as it must have an A or AAAA record pointing directly to an IP address. To work around this limitation, some providers introduced ALIAS/ANAME records, which act like a “hidden” CNAME: the system resolves the target domain to an IP address and returns it to the browser, mimicking the behavior of an A record.

These record types are not part of the official DNS standard, and their behavior depends on the provider.

For how many years can I register a domain?

Most domain extensions (TLDs) allow domains to be registered for periods ranging from 1 to 10 years. However, some extensions only allow registrations of 1, 2, or 5 years, depending on their internal policies. Registering a domain for multiple years can offer peace of mind and sometimes better pricing, but it does not provide a direct SEO advantage.

At cdmon, you can choose your preferred registration period within the limits of each TLD, renew your domain at any time before it expires, or enable automatic renewal so you never lose it.

Can I change the TLD and keep my website?

You cannot directly “change” the TLD of a domain. Instead, you need to register a new domain with the desired extension and redirect the old one using a 301 redirect to preserve traffic and search engine rankings.

Update internal links, your sitemap, and your properties in Google Search Console so the transition is gradual and visibility is maintained.

Here you can see how to change the domain associated with your hosting without losing SEO rankings.

How do I properly redirect www and non-www?

First, choose which version of your domain will be the primary one (with or without www) and use it consistently across your website and services. Then, you can manage this in different ways. At cdmon, the usual approach is to create a CNAME record for www that points to the main site (mydomain.com). You can also set up a permanent 301 redirect from the unused version to the preferred one.

What happens to WHOIS data after GDPR?

Since the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect, most registrars hide the registrant's personal data (name, address, phone number, and email) by default in WHOIS lookups. In some managed domains, partial information may still be displayed if the registry applies different privacy rules.

For this reason, cdmon includes private WHOIS protection by default and at no extra cost for all compatible domains.

Here you can see what information WHOIS shows and how domain privacy works.

What special requirements do some TLDs have (.es, .cat, .eu, etc.)?

Each domain extension (TLD) has its own registration rules. For example:

    • .es: managed by Red.es, with specific timeframes and mandatory data validation.
    • .cat: must be related to the Catalan language or culture.
    • .eu: only available to residents or businesses within the EU/EEA.

At cdmon, we guide you through the registration process and let you know if additional information is required.
